How Side Game handles your data.

Last updated:May 27, 2026 Effective:May 27, 2026

This Privacy Policy is provided as a starting reference and may be updated as Side Game evolves. Material changes will be communicated via email or in-app notice.

Who we are

Side Game is operated by Camilo Alemán, an individual data controller responsible for the app and this website. You can reach the data controller directly at support@playsidegamegolf.com for any privacy question or request covered by this policy.

References to "we", "us", or "Side Game" in this policy mean the same data controller.

What data we collect

We collect only the data we need to run the trips you play and to keep your account working. That data falls into the following categories.

Account information

  • Email address
  • Display name
  • Password — stored only as a salted bcrypt hash; we never see the plaintext
  • Optional handicap index, if you choose to add one to your profile

Apple Sign In / Google Sign In

If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the identifier and email address those providers return for your account. We do not receive any other information from your Apple ID or Google account.

Trip and gameplay data

  • The trips you belong to, the players in them, and your role in each trip
  • Hole-by-hole scores you enter, along with the formats those scores are played under
  • Bet ledger entries, side bets, presses, and the settlement matrix computed at the end of a trip
  • Course selections and tee choices used to apply handicaps

Purchases

When the trip admin pays a one-time group fee, we receive the transaction ID and receipt from Apple In-App Purchase or Google Play Billing so we can unlock the trip. We do not see or store payment card details — Apple and Google process payments inside their own flows.

Diagnostics and analytics

We collect anonymous usage events through PostHog — which screens are opened, which actions are taken, basic device and OS metadata. These events do not include sensitive content such as the actual scores entered or the amounts in your ledger.

Communications

When Side Game sends you an email — account verification, password reset, purchase receipt — that email is delivered through Resend. We retain the email address used for delivery and a record that the message was sent.

What we don't collect

We deliberately do not collect data that Side Game does not need to operate. Specifically, we do not collect:

  • Precise GPS location
  • Your contacts or address book
  • Health or physical activity data
  • Payment card numbers or card details — Apple and Google handle those in their own in-app purchase flow

How we use your data

We use the data described above to provide and maintain the Side Game service. Specifically:

  • To run your account — sign-in, password reset, account recovery, and verification emails.
  • To run your trips — store scores, compute handicaps and net results, maintain the bet ledger, and produce the settlement matrix at the end of a trip.
  • To process purchases — unlock paid trips for the admin who completes the in-app purchase.
  • To improve the app — read aggregated, anonymous usage data to understand which features are used and where users get stuck.
  • To communicate with you — respond to support requests, send transactional emails, and notify you of material changes to this policy or the terms.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not run advertising in the app, and we do not share your data with advertisers.

Third-party services we use

To run Side Game we rely on a small number of trusted sub-processors. Each one receives only the data needed to perform its specific function.

MongoDB Atlas
Hosted database. Stores account, trip, and gameplay data.
Railway
Backend application hosting.
Vercel
Marketing website hosting.
PostHog
Anonymous product analytics — screen views and event counts.
RevenueCat
In-app purchase orchestration. Receives transaction IDs and user IDs.
Resend
Transactional email delivery (verification, reset, receipts).
Apple In-App Purchase
Payment processing on iOS. Apple handles the card data; we never see it.
Google Play Billing
Payment processing on Android, when available. Google handles the card data.
Apple Sign In
Authentication, only if you choose to use it.
Google Sign In
Authentication, only if you choose to use it.

In-app purchases

The one-time group fee for longer trips is processed entirely through Apple In-App Purchase (on iOS) or Google Play Billing (on Android, when available). Side Game receives a transaction ID and a receipt from the platform — enough to confirm the purchase and unlock the trip — but never your card number, expiration date, or any other payment instrument detail.

If you need a receipt for a purchase, request one from the App Store or Google Play first. If you need help reconciling a charge that didn't unlock a trip, contact us at support@playsidegamegolf.com.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how Side Game is used in aggregate. The events we send are anonymous — they describe which screen was opened or which action was taken, but they do not contain the actual content of your scores, your handicaps, or the values in your bet ledger.

We use this data to decide which features to invest in, find rough edges, and prioritize fixes.

Your rights

You have the following rights with respect to the data Side Game stores about you:

  • Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Correction — ask us to correct or update inaccurate data, or change it yourself from the app where the data is editable.
  • Deletion — request that we delete your account and the data associated with it. We process deletion requests within 30 days.
  • Export — request a portable copy of your data.
  • Clarification — ask us any question about how a specific piece of your data is handled.

To exercise any of these rights, email support@playsidegamegolf.com from the address registered to your account. For deletion requests specifically, use the subject line Delete Account.

Data retention and deletion

We retain your account and trip data for as long as your account is active so that you can return to past trips, scores, and ledgers. When you request deletion of your account, your profile, trip participation, handicap history, and stored payment records are removed within 30 days.

The only exception is data we are required by law to retain — for example, transaction records related to in-app purchases that may be subject to tax or accounting retention rules. Where that applies, only the minimum required records are kept, separately from your active profile.

Children's privacy

Side Game is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13 in compliance with the United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If we discover that we have collected data from a child under 13 without verifiable parental consent, we will delete that data.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact support@playsidegamegolf.com and we will take action.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as Side Game evolves. When we make material changes, we will notify active users by email and/or with an in-app notice before the changes take effect.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Side Game after a change indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
